 HACKATHON CHALLENGES

CHILDREN AND YOUTH IN MEDIA

Despite the preventing efforts society is making today, children still come across inappropriate content, bullying and  hate speech. Scams have often manipulated children into disclosing private information and even committing life-threatening actions. What can we do more to protect younger audiences and ourselves from the harmful content online?

DISINFORMATION

59% of people surveyed this year said they were unsure what they see in the media is true and what isn't, while nearly 7 in 10 said they worry about "fake news" being used as "a weapon." To mitigate this, for example, Facebook users are asked to fill out a survey on what they determine is "high quality" news content. Do we have any alternative way to resolve this problem?

MEDIA IMMIGRANTS

People with migrant experience tend to seek news very broadly. Extensive news media consumption, desire for more international news than found in the national television channels, and a critical stance towards the news from these channels, are also part of the picture. How can we meet those needs and help people from different social, economical and media backgrounds have a smoother transition?

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

Media and information literacy is relevant to many of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) . One example is through raising citizens’ critical awareness of access to information, their own communications power, and their fundamental freedoms. Another example is by enhancing people’s abilities to detect and counter gender stereotypes in all types of media and technological platforms. More concretely, what can we do through MIL to enable citizen’s critical participation in the implementation of the SDGs?

DIALOGUE

Dialogue enables tolerance, mutual understanding and respect among people, communities, cultures and religions. It is vital for building solidarity in a global society around shared values. Media and information literacy (MIL) can play an important role in fostering intercultural and interreligious dialogue. What actions should be taken to counter people-oriented hate, exclusiveness, fragmentation, and promote dialogue?
